Sub: How to get that damn QuickLink Fax software to work!
After a lot of experimentation and a lot of BS by Smith Micro Software, I finally got my Zoom Fax modem to work the way it should. Here's what you do.
1) First, be sure you are using version 1.0.4 of QuickLink Fax. This version supports 6.0.2 to 6.0.7 and system 7. (Not sure about 7.0.1.)
2) Change the application memory size of your finder from the default of 160K to 500K. If you don't know how to do this, then you are probably not sufficiently knowledgeable to do this procedure safely. Warning--If you are running on a 1meg machine, you will probably run out of memory so either return the modem or order more RAM. (It's only about $35-40 a meg. LLB usually seems to have the lowest price at 800-848-8967.)
3) Place the "QL Fax Print" and the "Fax Manager" into your system folder. Turn your modem on and restart. If the Fax Manager loads you will see an icon that seems to print a document during the init load. It will probably not load the first time.
4) Copy the QuickLink Fax program to your hard drive. (It needs to run on a hard drive.) Launch the Quick Link application. Select "Receive Fax Setup" from the "Setup" menu. Be sure that "Load Fax Manager at Startup" is checked along with "Receive Fax On" Quit the application and restart your Mac. The Fax Manager should definitely load and you should not get any mysterious crashes. IMPORTANT: See note below about using AOL.
To send a fax:
Select the Chooser and select QL Fax (and close the Chooser.)
Launch the application for the document you want to print.
Select Print.
The QL Fax dialog should come up instead of your printer.
You can either send directly from the application or
you can save the document as a fax document for later
transmission with the QL Fax application. Use send fax if
you are only sending one document.
(You cannot send any document other than a fax document with the
QL Fax application.)
For example, to fax a Microsoft Word 4.0 document
Launch Word.
Select the Chooser and select QL Fax (and close the chooser)
Select "Print" from the "File" menu
Hit OK. Then, when it asks you, type in the fax number.
To send a lot of faxes:
The same as above except select "Save Fax" instead of the
default "Send Fax" each time you 'print'. You will
get a file dialog. Try to save all the faxes in one place.
When you have 'printed' all of the documents you want to fax,
launch the QL Fax application and select "Send Fax"
Then find the documents you 'printed' on the left column and
press "Add" to place them on the right column which
represents the files you are going to send. When you are
done adding, hit "Send" and then enter the fax number to
send to. It will then send all of the documents you added.
To receive a fax:
Do nothing. The QL Fax Manager will automatically answer and receive any incoming fax in the background and place it in the folder you select under the "Receive Fax Setup" option under the "Setup" menu.
IMPORTANT: You cannot use AOL software or Microphone while the receive fax option is enabled. There are two ways to disable the receive fax option. Pick the one that is the least inconvenient for you.
1) Don't have the modem on when your Mac starts up. You will get a message to the effect of "Can't find the modem. Fax Receive is disabled." You can of course turn on your modem later and use AOL or send a fax, but you will not be able to receive a fax until you restart with your modem on.
or
2) Leave the modem on for startup, but each time you want to log on to AOL or use Microphone, launch QuickLink and select "Disable Fax Receiving". You will not be able to receive faxes until you either re-launch QuickLink and select "Enable Fax Receiving" or restart your Mac with the modem on.
NEVER TRY TO LOG ON TO AOL WITH FAX RECEIVING ENABLED AS THIS WILL TAKE AN EXTRAORDINARILY LONG TIME WHICH YOU WILL THEN HAVE TO REQUEST THAT AOL NOT CHARGE YOU FOR.
I hope this works and I heartily condemn Smith Micro Software for writing such bad code and for telling me I didn't have the right cable. If you have any additional problems, I'd be happy to at least try to resolve them. E-mail me at Ivan One. And here is Smith Micro's Tech Support Number for Macintosh (714) 964-0045.
As the author, I declare this advice (this file) to be completely freeware. Please post it everywhere. My only request is that everyone reading this to please read Guy Kawasaki's column in the January '92 MacUser to find out why you need to use your fax modem to fax Que Publishing and tell them that you're not going to buy any of their books until they change the name of "The Little Mac Book".
